Winter snow leopard spotting from Kibber
In deep winter, local spotters scan the cliffs around Kibber and Chicham for snow leopards following blue sheep. Long cold days, heated homestays and real chances of a sighting, never guaranteed.
Snow leopards range across the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary all year, but in winter they follow their prey, bharal or blue sheep and ibex, down to slopes close to the villages. From January to March, villagers who know the ridges work as spotters, scanning with telescopes from roadside points and calling each other when a cat is seen.
A typical day starts at sunrise at −20 °C or colder, with hours of patient scanning, often from the roadside, and short walks on icy slopes. Sightings can be far away, sometimes hundreds of metres, which is why spotters carry scopes. Most groups spend five to seven days to give themselves a fair chance.
This is a serious winter trip. Access is only via Shimla and Kinnaur, homestays heat one room with a stove, and water pipes freeze. Book through a Kaza operator who pays village spotters fairly, keeps a respectful distance from animals and does not use baits. Talk to your doctor about winter altitude before you go.
