Night sky over the Spiti river at Rangrik
Cross the river to Rangrik, away from Kaza's lights, and watch the Milky Way rise over dry mountains. Clear, thin air and almost no pollution make Spiti one of the darkest skies you can reach by road in India.
Spiti's air is dry and thin, and there are few lights outside Kaza. On a moonless night the Milky Way is bright enough to cast faint shadows. Rangrik, a village across the Spiti river from Kaza, has open fields and a wide horizon that make it an easy stargazing spot without a long drive.
Check the moon calendar and plan for the week around the new moon. Dress for near-freezing temperatures even in August: down jacket, cap, gloves and a flask of tea. Let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes without looking at your phone, and use a red light if you need a torch.
Stay on paths and field edges, do not walk through crops, and keep voices low near houses. If you are staying at Rangrik, you can step outside the hotel; from Kaza, take a taxi and agree on a pickup time, because there are no taxis waiting at night.

Questions
Before you book
When is the best time for stargazing in Spiti?
Moonless nights from June to October, ideally in September when the monsoon has cleared from the approach roads and skies are cleanest.
How cold is it at night?
Near freezing even in summer, and well below zero from late September. Bring a down jacket, cap and gloves.
Do I need a guide to stargaze?
No. A taxi and warm clothes are enough. Some hotels and Kaza operators run sessions with telescopes in season.
