A slow walk around Tsomgo's shore
Walk the shore path at Tsomgo while the light is low and the stalls are still opening. In winter you see a frozen lake and snowfields; in late spring, rhododendron and primula on the slopes. Keep the pace slow and your hands warm.
Most vehicles stop at the north end of the lake, where tea stalls and yak handlers gather. A path runs along part of the shore, and it is worth walking a few hundred metres away from the stalls to see the lake as the locals describe it: a quiet, sacred water in a ring of steep, scrub-covered slopes.
The lake changes completely with the seasons. From about January to March the surface is usually frozen and the slopes white. In April and May the ice breaks and flowers start; in October and November the water is clear and the sky deep blue. The monsoon months bring cloud and rain, and the road is often blocked.
Altitude is the main thing to respect. At about 3,750 m, a short climb leaves you breathless, especially if you arrived in Gangtok the day before. Walk slowly, drink water and do not run in the snow. If you feel a strong headache, nausea or dizziness, go back down; symptoms usually ease quickly as you descend.
