Khecheopalri, the wish-fulfilling lake
Drive about 25 km to Khecheopalri, a quiet lake in a forest bowl at around 1,700 m, held sacred by Buddhists and Hindus. Walk the wooden jetty lined with prayer wheels to the water and hear why not a single leaf is said to float on its surface.

The last few hundred metres are on foot, past prayer flags and a small visitor area, to a wooden walkway leading out over the water. The lake is ringed by forest and is quiet in the mornings.
The lake is sacred to Buddhists and Hindus and is known as a wish-fulfilling lake. Local tradition says that birds remove any leaf that falls onto the surface, keeping it clean. Swimming, boating and fishing are not allowed. Pilgrims light butter lamps and turn the prayer wheels along the jetty.
Around the lake, a small village has homestays and a monastery on the slope above. Some travellers walk the old trail to Yuksom from here. Keep voices low, follow signs and avoid feeding the fish. In the monsoon, leeches are common on the forest paths.
