Korzok monastery and village at 4,522 m

A slow walk through Korzok, the only permanent village on Tso Moriri, up to its monastery of around 400 years, with views over the lake and the barley fields that grow here at a height few crops survive.

Korzok is a few dozen whitewashed houses, prayer walls and animal pens on the north-west shore of Tso Moriri. Barley grows in small walled fields, one of the highest farmed places in Ladakh, and the village serves as a base for Changpa families who range across the surrounding pastures.

The monastery stands above the houses. It is around 400 years old and draws pilgrims as well as visitors. Inside, butter lamps light old statues and paintings; outside, the courtyard looks straight down the lake. Mornings bring prayers and the softest light on the water.

Walk at half your normal pace. At 4,522 m even a short climb leaves you breathless, and it is easy to overdo it on the first evening. Ask before photographing people, walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls, and keep your voice low inside the monastery.

Questions

Before you book

How old is Korzok Monastery?

Korzok Monastery is about 400 years old and is still an active monastery with resident monks. It sits above Korzok village on the north-west shore of the lake. Visitors are welcome; a small entry fee or donation of ₹30–50 is usual.

Can I walk around Tso Moriri?

Short walks along the shore near Korzok are fine. The full lake is about 26 km long and there is no circuit path suitable for casual visitors, plus marshy areas where birds breed are off-limits. Longer treks in the area need a guide and full acclimatisation.

Is Korzok suitable for elderly travellers?

Only with care and a doctor's advice. At 4,522 m Korzok is higher than Pangong, and the village walk includes slopes. Seniors should visit after a full week in Ladakh, keep activity minimal and consider whether a stay at lower altitude suits them better. Talk to your doctor before you plan it.
