How to buy genuine Kashmir saffron in Pampore

Pampore is the best place to buy Kashmir saffron, but fakes and blends are common across India. Knowing the grades, the GI label and a few simple checks helps you buy well, directly from growers or official channels.

Kashmir saffron is sold in three traditional forms recognised under the GI: lachha, stigmas just separated from the flowers and dried loose with their lighter lower part; mongra, the red stigmas detached, sun-dried and processed in the traditional way; and guchhi, like lachha but bundled together and tied with cloth thread. Mongra is the most prized and most expensive. Genuine saffron in recent years has sold for roughly ₹250–500 a gram depending on grade and season.

Buy from growers you meet through a trusted contact, from government-approved outlets, or through the trading centre at Dussu, Pampore, set up to grade, test and auction growers' saffron. Look for a GI logo and batch details. Avoid very cheap saffron sold by touts on houseboats or roadside stalls.

Simple checks help. Genuine stigmas are dark red, slightly trumpet-shaped at one end, and release a golden-yellow colour slowly when placed in warm water, not instantly red. The smell should be strong, honeyed and slightly bitter. Store saffron in an airtight tin, away from light.

Questions

Before you book

How much does Kashmir saffron cost?

Genuine Kashmir saffron has sold for roughly ₹250–500 a gram in recent years, with mongra at the top end. Prices change with the harvest and demand. Anything far cheaper is likely blended, low grade or fake.

How can I tell if saffron is real?

Real saffron threads are dark red, slightly flared at one end, and release a golden colour slowly in warm water. Fake saffron often bleeds red instantly or feels oily. Buy with a GI label from approved sellers or growers.

What is the difference between mongra and lachha saffron?

Mongra is only the deep red upper part of the stigma, dried and separated, giving the strongest colour and aroma. Lachha keeps the whole stigma with the lighter lower part attached. Mongra costs more; both are genuine Kashmir saffron under the GI.
