Trek · Aru Valley, Kashmir
Tarsar and Marsar lakes trek from Aru
From Aru, this trek climbs via Lidderwat and Shekwas to Tarsar, a deep blue lake below steep peaks at about 3,800 m, then crosses a pass to the Sundersar and Marsar lakes. It is shorter and slightly easier than the Great Lakes trek, with equally fine meadows.
Day one follows the Lidderwat trail, and day two climbs through birch and meadow to Shekwas, a high pasture often busy with herders. Day three reaches Tarsar, about 3,800 m, an almond-shaped lake under steep rock walls. Many groups take a rest day here before crossing the Tarsar pass, around 4,000 m, to Sundersar and the dramatic gorge view down to Marsar.
Because camps are above 3,000 m from the second night, acclimatisation is important. Ascend steadily, drink plenty of water, and turn back if symptoms of altitude sickness worsen. Talk to your doctor before the trek if you have a medical condition. Weather can turn suddenly, so pack rain gear and warm layers.
The trek runs from about July to mid-September. Join a registered operator or hire a local guide and pony team in Pahalgam or Aru. Marsar lake lies at the head of a valley that drains towards Dachigam National Park, and wildlife rules limit where you can go. Carry all rubbish out and avoid washing in the lakes.

Questions
Before you book
How difficult is the Tarsar Marsar trek?
Moderate. Most days involve 5–7 hours of walking, and the highest point is the Tarsar pass at about 4,000 m. It suits fit beginners with some hiking experience and good preparation. Acclimatisation days and a steady pace make it comfortable for most.
Which is better, Tarsar Marsar or Kashmir Great Lakes?
Tarsar Marsar is shorter, about six or seven days, with one main pass and fewer crowds. The Great Lakes trek is longer with three passes and more lakes. For a first Himalayan trek, Tarsar Marsar is the gentler choice.
Is there network on the Tarsar Marsar trek?
No, beyond Aru there is almost no mobile coverage. Tell family your dates, carry a power bank, and rely on your guide's knowledge. Some operators carry satellite phones for emergencies; ask before booking.
