Evening aarti on the Bhagirathi at Gangotri
Watch the evening aarti of the goddess Ganga at her temple and on the riverbank as the gorge falls into shadow, then walk to Bhagiratha's rock and Surya Kund in the last light.
Gangotri's temple is a modest white stone building with a gilded top, set back from the river in a courtyard. The image of the goddess Ganga inside is attended by the Semwal priests from Mukhba. The evening aarti, with lamps, bells and chanting, is held at the temple and on the steps above the Bhagirathi; pilgrims float small leaf boats with flames on the water.
Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to find a place on the steps. Outside the opening and closing weeks, crowds are manageable and the mood is calm. After the aarti, walk a few metres to Bhagiratha's rock, where the king is said to have performed his penance, and on to Surya Kund, where the river plunges through a narrow granite chasm with a roar you feel in your chest.
Nights at 3,100 m are cold, even in June, so wear warm layers. Photography of the aarti from the steps is usually fine; keep it discreet, and do not photograph inside the sanctum. Many pilgrims buy sealed cans of Gangajal from shops near the temple to carry home. If you are heading to Gaumukh, this is a good evening to rest and drink plenty of water.

Questions
Before you book
What are Gangotri temple timings?
The temple usually opens around 6 am and closes around 9 pm, with a break in the early afternoon. The evening aarti is held around sunset. Timings vary by season; confirm locally on arrival.
When does Gangotri temple open and close?
It opens on Akshaya Tritiya, usually in late April or early May, and closes on Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali. The goddess then moves to Mukhba near Harsil for winter. Check current status before you travel.
Can I bathe in the Ganga at Gangotri?
Yes, at the ghats near the temple, holding the chains provided. The water is close to freezing and very fast. Take a quick dip only, never enter the main current, and keep children back from the edge.
