Birding for monal in Kedarnath sanctuary

Walk the forest edges and meadows around Chopta at dawn with a local birding guide to look for Himalayan monal, Uttarakhand's state bird, and the koklass pheasants, laughingthrushes, rosefinches and woodpeckers of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.

Chopta lies inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area of oak, rhododendron and alpine meadow between the Mandakini and Alaknanda valleys. Its middle elevations hold many Himalayan bird species within easy reach of the road, and Chopta has become one of the best-known birding stops in Uttarakhand. Local guides know where birds feed at dawn along the forest edge and on the open slopes above.

The bird most people hope for is the Himalayan monal: the male shines metallic green, blue and copper, and often feeds on open grassy slopes near the Tungnath path in the early morning. Spring, from March to May, is breeding season, when males call and display. Look also for koklass pheasants, streaked laughingthrushes, rosefinches and, with luck, Himalayan griffon vultures circling the ridge.

Bring binoculars, wear muted colours and walk slowly. Keep at a distance from nesting birds and never use call playback in the sanctuary. Musk deer and Himalayan tahr live here too, but are shy. A morning of birding pairs well with an afternoon rest before a pre-dawn Chandrashila climb the next day.

Questions

Before you book

Where can I see the Himalayan monal near Chopta?

On open slopes and forest edges along the Tungnath path and the road towards Mandal, usually in the first two hours after sunrise. Sightings are common in spring and autumn but never guaranteed. A local guide improves your chances considerably.

What is the best season for birding at Chopta?

March to May, when many species breed and call, and October to November, when skies are clear and some altitudinal migrants move down. Monsoon makes birding difficult because of cloud and leeches on forest paths.

Do I need a permit for birding at Chopta?

No separate permit is usually needed for walking on public paths and roads around Chopta, though the forest department collects fees at some points such as Deoria Tal. Entering deeper sanctuary areas may need permission; check current status before you travel.
