Birding walk at Latpanchar forest edge

Latpanchar is a small village and cinchona plantation on the ridge above the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, which drops towards the plains near Sevoke. The mix of forest, plantation and open slopes draws a wide range of birds, and Latpanchar has become known among Indian birders, especially for hornbills that feed in fruiting trees in the cooler months.

Start at first light with a local guide who knows which trees are fruiting that week. Walks follow roads and forest edges rather than entering the sanctuary core, which needs separate permission. Expect barbets, bulbuls, sunbirds, drongos and laughingthrushes even on a quiet morning. Bring binoculars and keep voices low.

Sightings are never guaranteed. Mornings from October to April give the best chances, and mist can delay activity until the sun warms the slopes. Return to Sittong for a late breakfast. Do not use playback calls to attract birds, and keep to paths.

Questions

Before you book

Will I see hornbills at Latpanchar?

Possibly, but not certainly. Hornbills visit fruiting trees around Latpanchar mainly in the cooler months, and a local guide improves your chances. Go early and be patient. Many other species are easier to see on any morning.

Do I need a permit to birdwatch at Latpanchar?

Walking on public roads and village paths does not need a permit. Entering Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary itself requires forest department permission and fees. Rules change, so check current status before you travel and follow your guide's advice.

What should I bring for birding?

Binoculars, a warm layer for dawn, water, and neutral-coloured clothes. A field guide or birding app helps. Leeches appear in the wet months, so wear long socks. Keep noise low and avoid playback calls.
