Permit morning and a walk through the Bhutan Gate
For Indians entering by road, the first Bhutan experience is practical: meeting your guide, collecting the entry permit and paying the SDF, then walking through the Bhutan Gate into a different pace of life.
The Regional Immigration Office in Phuentsholing handles entry permits for Indian nationals and other regional tourists. As we understand it, you show a valid Indian passport (six months' validity) or voter ID, a hotel booking and your itinerary, and pay the SDF of ₹1,200 per night. Many travellers now apply online through the Department of Immigration before arriving, and their licensed operator handles the paperwork. Check current status before you travel.
Your guide usually meets you at the gate or hotel. Queues at the office can be long on Mondays and in festival seasons, and the office does not process permits on government holidays. Keep photocopies of your ID, passport-size photos and printouts of hotel confirmations.
Once done, walk back through the gate to see the contrast between Jaigaon and Phuentsholing: horns and hawkers on one side, quieter pavements on the other. Have lunch in a local restaurant, then rest before the long drive uphill next morning. Your guide will explain where you may and may not go without them.

Questions
Before you book
Where do Indians get the Bhutan permit at Phuentsholing?
At the Regional Immigration Office near the gate, on working days. Applying online through Bhutan's Department of Immigration a few days in advance is faster. Bring your passport or voter ID. Check current status before you travel.
Can I enter Phuentsholing without a permit?
Day visitors often walk across the gate into town, but you need a permit and guide to go beyond the first checkpoint, and you should not stay overnight without proper entry formalities. Check current status before you travel.
How long does the permit take?
If your documents are complete, usually a few hours; online applications approved in advance mean only a quick check at the office. Queues are longest on Monday mornings and before festivals.
