Druk Wangyel Tshechu on 13 December

A modern festival held each 13 December on the ground in front of the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, with dances performed by the Royal Bhutan Army rather than monks, against the backdrop of the 108 chortens and, on clear days, the high peaks.

The Dochula Druk Wangyel Tshechu began in 2011 to honour the fourth king and the armed forces. Unlike most tshechus, which are danced by monks or village laymen, its dances are performed by members of the Royal Bhutan Army, and some tell the story of the 2003 operation. It is held each year on 13 December, and the 2026 tentative calendar confirms that date.

Arrive by 9 am to get a place on the slope in front of the lhakhang. Bhutanese families come in their best gho and kira with packed lunches. The setting is the draw: the dance ground sits between the temple, the chortens and, on a good day, a white line of mountains. Bring a cushion or mat to sit on.

Dress modestly and keep to the edges of the dance ground. Photography is allowed outdoors, but do not walk into the performance area or use flash in dancers' faces. Afterwards, continue to Punakha, which at 1,200 m is much warmer for the night.
