Nuranang Falls near Jang

A curtain waterfall about 100 m high on the Tawang side of Sela, fed by snowmelt from the pass. An easy walk from the road, and fullest after the monsoon in September and October.

Nuranang Falls lies about 2 km from Jang, roughly 40 km before Tawang on the main road. A short side road and a walk of a few minutes bring you to the viewpoint. The Nuranang river, which rises on the northern slopes of Sela, falls about 100 m in two drops into a rocky pool, throwing spray across the path on days of high flow.

The falls are also known locally as Jang or Bong Bong Falls. A small hydroelectric plant at the base supplies power to the surrounding villages, a reminder that many Monpa settlements here still rely on tiny local power projects. The falls appeared in a 1997 Hindi film, which made them famous with visitors from across India.

Visit late morning when the sun reaches the gorge. The path can be wet and slippery, especially in October when the flow is strong, so wear shoes with grip and keep children close. In deep winter the flow drops and parts of the falls may ice over. There are tea stalls near the parking area, and the visit fits easily into a Tawang–Sela day.

Questions

Before you book

How far is Nuranang Falls from Tawang?

About 40 km, or 1.5 hours by road, near the village of Jang on the main Tawang–Sela road. Most visitors stop on the way in or out of Tawang, or include it in a half-day taxi trip to Sela Pass.

Is the walk to Nuranang Falls difficult?

No. It is a short walk of a few minutes from the parking area. The path can be wet and slippery with spray, so wear shoes with good grip. It is suitable for children and older travellers with care.

When is Nuranang Falls at its best?

September and October, after the monsoon, bring the strongest flow and clear skies. In spring, snowmelt keeps the falls lively. In midwinter the volume drops and some edges may freeze, which has its own appeal.
