Ways to save in Himachal
- Book HRTC Volvo seats from Delhi on the HRTC online portal rather than through agents; the same seat often costs ₹200–400 more through a reseller.
- Use HRTC ordinary buses between towns: Shimla to Manali costs roughly ₹450–650 against ₹5,000–7,000 for a taxi.
- Take the ordinary Kalka–Shimla trains in second class for under ₹100; the scenery is identical to the chair-car trains.
- Avoid Shimla and Manali in the Christmas–New Year week and mid-May to June, when room rates can double for the same room.
- Order the thali or a plate of siddu at local dhabas instead of café menus; a filling meal costs ₹120–250.
- In Kinnaur and Tirthan, homestays with dinner and breakfast included at ₹1,200–2,500 per person cost less than eating out every night.
